Evolution of erythrocyte morphology in amphibians (Amphibia: Anura) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Wei,Jie; Li,Yan-Yan; Wei,Li; Ding,Guo-Hua; Fan,Xiao-Li; Lin,Zhi-Hua.
ABSTRACT We compared the morphology of the erythrocytes of five anurans, two toad species - Bufo gargarizans (Cantor, 1842) and Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Schneider, 1799) and three frog species - Fejervarya limnocharis (Gravenhorst, 1829), Microhyla ornata (Duméril & Bibron, 1841), and Rana zhenhaiensis (Ye, Fei & Matsui, 1995). We then reconstructed the ancestral state of erythrocyte size (ES) and nuclear size (NS) in amphibians based on a molecular tree. Nine morphological traits of erythrocytes were all significantly different among the five species. The results of principal component analysis showed that the first component (49.1% of variance explained) had a high positive loading for erythrocyte length, nuclear length, NS and ratio of...

On the occurrence and identity of triploids of Rana kl. esculenta Linnaeus and R. lessonae Camerano in The Netherlands (Anura: Ranidae) Naturalis
Blommers-Schlösser, Rose M.A..
According to electrophoresis and erythrocyte size the genotypes of 756 waterfrogs, collected during 1986—1988 in 54 localities in The Netherlands, were classified as belonging to 5 different genotypes: 331 diploid R. lessonae (LL), 5 triploid R. lessonae (LLL), 250 diploid R. kl. esculenta (LR), 133 triploid R. kl. esculenta (LLR), and 37 diploid R. ridibunda (RR). The occurrence of triploid R. kl. esculenta in The Netherlands is reported for the first time and triploid R. lessonae has not yet been reported previously. There are indications that LL gametes could be produced by LLR triploids and LL diploids. R. kl. esculenta in R. kl. esculenta and R. ridibunda — R. kl. esculenta populations of the western regions seems to be exclusively triploid, whereas...
